Solitude Introduction | April 7-13, 2024

Lesson

Conversation Starter

Are you a person who likes to spend time alone or do you prefer to be with people most of the time? How do you spend your time when you are not with people?

Previous Week Review

Review the passages and practices from last week’s lesson. Don’t skip this step even if people are reluctant to respond as it’s vital to see how each week’s topic is being practiced during the week and what obstacles people are facing.

Leader reading and Discussion

We are beginning a new study about the practice of solitude. Next week we will start the Practicing the Way video series. This week we will read scripture together and talk about our feelings and experiences with solitude.

Leader led discussion of the following questions and statement.

How would you define solitude in your own words?

What kinds of positive and negative images come to mind with the word solitude?

John Ortberg says, “Solitude is the one place where we can gain freedom from forces of society that will otherwise relentlessly mold us.” Why would he say this?

Read the following passages together stopping after each to discuss.

·      Isaiah 30:15           How could quietness and trust produce strength?

·      Psalm 62:5-8         How can solitude help us rest in God?

·      Luke 4-1-14            What was the result of Jesus being in solitude, fasting and praying?

·      Matthew 14:1-23    Why do you think Jesus chose to withdraw to a solitary place?

·      Mark 1:35-38

Practice this week

1)     Read through one of the Gospels and take note of times Jesus chooses to spend time alone.

3)     Take a silent prayer walk.

4)     Consider getting a copy of the book, Invitation to Solitude and Silence by Ruth Haley Barton.

Preparation for next week
